Broccoli Bunch–Orange partnership

Cinnamon Bun

Broccoli Bunch–Orange partnership is one of the clearest signs that Broccoli Bunch’s adventure is becoming a life shared with others rather than a solitary sequence of survivals. Orange first appears as the result of a deliberate magical experiment, but the relationship quickly exceeds the function of a summoned companion: Orange becomes a mobile presence at Broccoli Bunch’s shoulder, in a bandoleer, or directly in the path of danger, while Broccoli Bunch learns to read her silences, indifference, interruptions, and unmistakable signs of concern.

Summoning and First Bond

Broccoli Bunch discovers the possibility of calling Orange while hiking toward a campsite. The object involved is the Enchanted Cheshire Cat’s Collar, an enchanted Cheshire Cat’s Collar of Rare quality that allows its user to summon a spirit cat once a day. The first attempt seems to fail. Broccoli Bunch pushes mana into the collar and sees nothing happen, then concentrates again and spends nearly seventy points of mana before the summoning finally takes form.

The manifestation is both mechanical and uncanny. A sparkling cloud twists at chest height, collapses inward as though drawn into a black hole, and produces a popping sound. From that opening comes not an ordinary cat but a kitten: a ball of semitransparent fluff suspended in the air. The kitten walks toward Broccoli Bunch through the air, and Insight identifies the result as a spirit cat companion bound to Broccoli Bunch. The bond is therefore not merely an act of ownership or temporary conjuration; the system itself defines Orange as a companion attached to Broccoli Bunch.

Broccoli Bunch responds with immediate, almost overwhelming delight. The kitten feels soft yet insubstantial, present without being wholly material, and warm in contrast to the cold ghosts Broccoli Bunch has touched. Broccoli Bunch picks Orange from the air, spins once, hugs her, and calls the summoning the best day ever. Orange’s unamused expression establishes the partnership’s enduring comic balance: Broccoli Bunch is openly affectionate and excitable, while Orange retains the detached judgment associated with a cat. Even before Orange receives a name, the relationship has acquired emotional force.

Companionship on the Road

Orange becomes part of Broccoli Bunch’s ordinary traveling routine rather than remaining an occasional magical resource. Broccoli Bunch carries her in a bandoleer, lets her sleep through long stretches of travel, and places her on a shoulder when preparing to move again. When Broccoli Bunch meets the Grenoil expedition, Orange is taken from the bandoleer after sleeping all afternoon; waking, she shakes out her fur and surveys the gathered travelers. Broccoli Bunch introduces her to Donat as a spirit cat, making Orange a visible part of Broccoli Bunch’s identity in the eyes of new acquaintances.

The partnership also operates through practical exchange. Broccoli Bunch thanks a plant and Mister Blue after finding it, packs up the gathered materials, cleans the hands, and replaces Orange on the shoulder before continuing. Orange is thus present amid the small maintenance rituals of adventuring: collecting useful things, cleaning up, managing equipment, and resuming the road. Her place beside Broccoli Bunch is not reserved for battles or dramatic revelations; she is woven into the physical continuity of travel.

The pair’s shared life is punctuated by comic friction. When Orange floats in front of Broccoli Bunch and blocks the path, Broccoli Bunch steps around her, only for Orange to move into the way again. Broccoli Bunch calls her a stupid cat, but the interruption gives Orange a form of agency that a passive summoned creature would lack. She can obstruct, insist, and redirect. Their partnership therefore contains disagreement without breaking: Broccoli Bunch complains, Orange remains undeterred, and the scene makes their intimacy legible through a familiar domestic struggle rather than through solemn declarations.

From Solitude to Friendship

Orange’s presence accompanies Broccoli Bunch’s widening social world. When Donat announces that the Grenoil group has found a human, Broccoli Bunch is not entirely alone at the edge of the road; Orange is already part of the encounter, a spirit companion that must be explained and recognized. Broccoli Bunch later exchanges a map of Threewells with Leonard, offering knowledge of the explored town in the hope of bargaining for food or another useful benefit. The map represents Broccoli Bunch’s experience, while Orange represents the new companionship produced by that experience. Together they mark a transition from isolated resourcefulness toward participation in networks of trust, trade, and mutual recognition.

That transition receives explicit system confirmation after Broccoli Bunch says goodbye to the Grenoil party. The party forms up and departs, leaving Broccoli Bunch melancholic but hopeful about meeting them again. Immediately afterward, repeating a Special Action enough times unlocks the general skill Friendmaking. The sequence links companionship to advancement without reducing friendship to a reward: Orange is the first intimate proof that Broccoli Bunch can form bonds, while the later skill announcement gives that capacity a formal place in the leveling system.

Orange also changes how Broccoli Bunch experiences separation. After leaving the group, Broccoli Bunch continues into the unknown with the possibility of seeing the others again. During the darker trek home, when visibility becomes poor and Broccoli Bunch considers hiding in the trees or walking by candlelight, a yawning Orange pokes her head from the bandoleer. Broccoli Bunch jokes about Orange’s ability to sleep, and Orange answers with a flat look before surveying the surroundings. The scene turns a potentially vulnerable night journey into a shared one. Orange does not need to solve the darkness to alter its meaning; her appearance makes the road inhabited.

Protection, Recognition, and Limits

The partnership gains further significance when Broccoli Bunch becomes involved with Amaryllis and the Exploration Guild. After Broccoli Bunch and Amaryllis endure harrowing experiences together and Broccoli Bunch saves her, Broccoli Bunch realizes that the resulting happiness comes from having made a friend. Orange is not the friend being discussed in that moment, but the contrast clarifies Orange’s role. Orange is the relationship that emerged from magical binding and daily proximity; Amaryllis is a newer human friendship that Broccoli Bunch must name and negotiate. Broccoli Bunch’s readiness to recognize both forms of attachment shows how the earlier partnership has prepared a place for broader loyalty.

When Rainnewt disappears, the Exploration Guild crisis exposes the danger surrounding Broccoli Bunch’s membership and missions. Amaryllis explains that Rainnewt accepted Broccoli Bunch without proper channels and arranged the missions, while also being suspected of attempting to have Amaryllis kidnapped. Abraham proposes taking the girls west to Greenshade and dropping them at the Exploration Guild branch there, and Mathide agrees that Broccoli Bunch may accompany Amaryllis because Amaryllis trusts her. Orange is not named as a speaker or decision-maker in this dispute, yet the established partnership matters to the proposed movement: Broccoli Bunch’s place among other people, including the companion carried during the journey, is now part of the practical problem of safety, trust, and belonging.

Orange’s partnership with Broccoli Bunch is consequently neither a simple master-and-familiar arrangement nor a purely sentimental attachment. It includes enchantment, binding, care, annoyance, physical dependence, and silent intervention. Orange can be affectionate without becoming obedient, useful without being reduced to equipment, and watchful without explaining herself. Broccoli Bunch, in turn, treats her as a living companion even while speaking to her with the exasperation reserved for someone whose presence is secure.

Narrative Significance

Orange gives Broccoli Bunch a first durable relationship that is not founded on a guild contract, an information bargain, or a rescue obligation. The partnership begins with a rare enchanted item and a costly expenditure of mana, but its lasting value lies in what follows: a summoned kitten becomes a carried companion, a public introduction, a source of interruption, and a quiet reassurance on the road. The transformation from collar function to emotional presence mirrors Broccoli Bunch’s wider movement through the world.

The relationship also embodies the book’s recurring collision between formal systems and lived feeling. The collar has a once-per-day summoning rule; Insight records a bound companion; mana is deducted in a measurable quantity; and Friendmaking is unlocked through repeated action. Yet none of those categories can fully contain the scene’s emotional excess, including Broccoli Bunch’s delighted embrace and the conviction that the day is the best ever. Orange exists simultaneously as a system-defined entity and as a stubborn, sleepy, opaque individual.

Most importantly, Orange makes companionship visible before Broccoli Bunch has the confidence to claim friendship elsewhere. She accompanies Broccoli Bunch through encounters with the Grenoil expedition, through exchanges involving Threewells, through lonely roads and dangerous uncertainty, and into the increasingly complicated social world of the Exploration Guild. Her recurring appearances turn movement into shared movement. Broccoli Bunch may still walk into the unknown, but Orange ensures that the unknown is no longer faced by one person alone.
